On May 22nd, 2011, a massive EF5 tornado struck Joplin devastating the city, taking 161 lives and destroying 7,500 homes and over 500 businesses.
A local organization, Rebuild Joplin, was formed by Joplin residents days after the tornado hit. It began as a resources connection website, linking those in need with those who wished to help. Shortly thereafter, it became clear that the Joplin community needed a strong leader for residential recovery. In late 2011, Rebuild Joplin became SBP's first affiliate.
On December 6th, 2014, SBP and Rebuild Joplin became the last rebuilding organization to close its Joplin operation having completed the recovery in that community. By implementing SBP's model for post-disaster rebuilding, SBP and Rebuild Joplin helped residents recover eighteen months ahead the schedule estimated by the Federal government.
