Opportunity Housing Program

It is not enough to merely build back owner-occupied homes after disasters. In serving over a dozen disaster-impacted communities over the past 15 years, we have learned that access to safe, stable housing is the cornerstone of helping communities achieve long-term recovery and build resilience. That’s why SBP prioritizes expanding access to safe, affordable, and high-quality housing through our Opportunity Housing Program. Under this program, SBP builds or rehabs homes, duplexes, and apartments for rent and sale to lower-income households that are affordable, resilient, and energy-efficient. Since 2009, SBP has built over 200 homes for sale and rent to low and moderate-income households in New Orleans, partnering with local government entities and philanthropic donors to obtain land and funding. SBP’s Opportunity Housing Team is committed to building resilient, sustainable, and energy-efficient homes and constructs to both Energy Star and Fortified Gold Standards. It also strives to build in the most inclusive manner possible and seeks to engage with DBE’s in the area in which it constructs to contribute to the socio-economic vibrancy of those locations.

Rentals

Disasters do not only affect homeowners. Renters may be even more vulnerable to disasters as they tend to be lower-income, and the price of un-damaged housing often rises after a large disaster. To better weather future disasters, low-income renters need resilient homes that are affordable to them. Through SBP’s rental units, we provide stable and safe housing options to low- and moderate-income renters. Currently, SBP has 125 rental units in New Orleans, with plans to build more in New Orleans, Houston, and other communities where we operate.

Homeownership

SBP helps to make the dream of homeownership a reality for low and moderate-income families by building high-quality homes at an affordable price and pairing these homes with government-provided down payment and closing cost assistance where available. Built to standards like Energy Star 3.0 and FORTIFIED Gold, SBP homes are energy efficient and storm-resilient, so families can build equity and save money on energy costs now, and be better prepared to weather future disasters. In fact, SBP is the primary builder of FORTIFIED homes in Louisiana, building homes to withstand hurricane-force winds from Lake Charles to New Orleans. Since 2009, SBP has built nearly 100 homes for first-time homebuyers across the New Orleans area.
